Chieti underground

Between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the II century AD, Chieti reached its maximum expansion; the inhabited center extended on a surface that went from the Civitella to via Arniense. Based on rough estimates, the population was estimated to be between 30,000 and 60,000. It is obvious that such a number of inhabitants had problems with water supply: for this purpose, in the subsoil of Chieti, a system of interconnected arch tanks was created and connected by a set of tunnels. The latter, in turn, had ventilation wells regularly located along the route.
